How to Remove Wax Stains from Tablecloths

1Harden the Wax

Do not touch or wipe the wax while it is warm, as this embeds it into the fibers ¹. Allow it to cool completely. If the wax is still soft, place an ice pack inside a plastic bag and hold it against the stain until the wax becomes brittle ².

2Scrape Excess Wax

Use a dull edge, such as a butter knife, spoon, or plastic credit card, to gently scrape off the surface wax ³. Do not use a sharp blade, as it can snag or cut the fabric ⁴.

3Heat and Absorb

Caution: The iron is hot and can cause skin burns; handle the iron by the handle only and keep fingers away from the soleplate.

Place plain white paper towels or a brown paper bag both underneath and on top of the stain ⁵. Set your iron to a low or medium heat setting with NO STEAM ⁶. Press the iron onto the paper, moving it frequently to a clean section of the paper as the wax transfers ⁷. Repeat until no more wax is absorbed ⁸.

4Treat Residual Stains

If a greasy mark remains, apply liquid dish soap, rub gently, and let sit for 15 minutes ⁹. If color residue remains, dab with rubbing alcohol ¹⁰. Always test the alcohol on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not affect the fabric dye ¹¹.

5Wash and Inspect

Launder the tablecloth using the warmest water safe for the fabric ¹². Crucially, inspect the area before putting it in the dryer ¹³. If any stain remains, repeat the treatment steps; heat-drying will permanently set any remaining wax or pigment ¹⁴.
